Three Enter Not Guilty Pleas in Professor Breaking Bad Meth and Bike Gang Case
Three defendants accused in a drug-trafficking case allegedly led by a college professor and biker pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday.
Holly Robinson, Hans Preszler and Jeremy Disney had their day in court before Judge Kenneth Barr. Their attorney denied all allegations on behalf of the defendants during their arraignment in San Bernardino Superior Court.
The prosecution says the three defendants were part of a drug trafficking ring operated by Cal State professor Stephen Kinzey. The authorities also Kinzey is the president of the San Bernardino Mountains Chapter of the Devils Disciples motorcycle club.
All that aside, his current and former students seem, in general, pleased with his performance in the classroom, at least according to their comments on RateMyProfessor.
Kinzey’s lawyer, James Glick, said his client appeared in court that same day and added that he received more evidence through discovery from prosecutors.
“Just about every time I see the D.A. I get more,” Glick said.
Glick said Kinzey is depressed and on paid leave from Cal State as a result of the investigation and arrest.
“He’s trying to live a normal life as much as possible,” Glick said.
Glick said Kinzey is out on bond, as are Disney, Robinson and Preszler.
Kinzey, Disney, Robinson and Preszler return to court in January.
Prosecutors say Disney was responsible for supplying meth to Kinzey for resale. Eleven defendants were charged in the case, and nearly half of them have accepted plea bargains to avoid trial.
Kinzey’s attorney said the Devils Diciples is just a club of people who ride motorcycles and donate to charities, while the prosecution says the Devils Diciples is a gang and essentially a criminal enterprise whose members sport long criminal histories.
“By selling drugs, (Kinzey) is furthering the reputation of the gang as a criminal enterprise,” said Deputy District Attorney Steve Sanchez.
The police began investigating the group earlier this year during a federal undercover operation involving outlaw biker clubs and detectives say Kinzey purchased large amounts of meth from Disney and then distributed large quantities to other defendants for resale in smaller amounts.
